THE SHORT VERSION
In Suno the lyrics box is the prompt. The structure you write decides the song you get back. Verse and chorus tags, rhyme density, syllable counts, and meta-tags all live there.
• Bracket tags like [Verse], [Chorus], and [Bridge] are how you teach Suno the shape of the song. Without them the model guesses, and it usually guesses a flat loop.
• Rhyme density and syllable count per line are the rhythm section. Tighten them and the vocal lands on the rhythm. Leave them loose and the melody wanders.
• Meta-tags in square brackets carry the style instructions the lyrics themselves cannot hold. Genre, tempo, vocal type, and mood all live above the first verse.
• The structure breaks when tags fight the words. A [Bridge] tag over a chorus-length block, or a slow meta-tag over fast syllables, and the model picks one to ignore.
ONE · VERSE, CHORUS, BRIDGE TAGS
Suno reads the lyrics box as a script. Square brackets are stage directions. [Verse] tells the model to lower the energy and let the story move. [Chorus] tells it to lift and repeat the hook. [Bridge] tells it to leave the key for four bars and come back. These tags are not decoration. They are the only structure the model can parse, because the lyrics box has no timeline, no tracks, no arrangement view. The brackets are the arrangement.
A prompt without tags gives Suno a flat plane of text. It will sing all of it at roughly the same intensity, and the song will sound like one long verse with a louder bit in the middle. I wrote a folk track this way last spring and could not find the chorus until the third listen. The words were right. The shape was missing.
The fix is to tag every section, even the ones that feel obvious. [Intro], [Verse 1], [Chorus], [Verse 2], [Chorus], [Bridge], [Chorus], [Outro]. The tag is how you tell Suno where the song breathes. A six-section song with tags will top a twelve-section song without them, every time.

TWO · RHYME AND SYLLABLE CONTROL
Underneath the tags, the words carry their own structure. Two things matter: how many syllables each line holds, and where the rhymes land. Suno maps line length to melodic phrasing. A line of eight syllables gets sung in one breath. A line of fourteen gets either rushed or split, and the split is where the vocal starts to drift off the rhythm.
I count syllables the way I count words in a haiku. Verse lines sit at six to nine. Chorus lines sit at five to seven, shorter so the hook lands faster. If a chorus line runs long, I cut it before I generate. A chorus that fits in one breath is a chorus the listener can sing back.
Rhyme density works the same way. A verse with end rhymes every fourth line sounds spoken. A verse with end rhymes on every line sounds like a jingle. The sweet spot for most genres is alternating: line two rhymes with line four, line one and three stand alone. The model hears that pattern and builds the melody around the rhyme, not against it.
THREE · META-TAGS FOR STYLE
Above the first verse, before any lyric, the style block lives in its own brackets. This is where the prompt stops being a poem and becomes a production brief. [Style: indie folk, acoustic guitar, female vocal, 85 bpm, warm] tells Suno the genre, the instrumentation, the voice, the tempo, and the mood in one line. The model reads it before it reads a single word of the lyric.
The order inside the style block matters less than the specificity. "Indie folk" is a genre. "Acoustic guitar with brushed drums and a distant string pad" is an arrangement. The second one gives the model a stage to build on. The style block is where you do the arranging you cannot do in the lyrics.
One habit I keep: I write the style block last, after the lyrics are done. It is tempting to start with the genre and write to it. But the lyrics tell you what the song wants to be, and the style block is where you confirm it. Writing style first locks the sound before the words have asked for anything.
FOUR · WHERE THE STRUCTURE BREAKS
Structure fails when the tags and the words disagree. A [Bridge] tag over a block that is eight lines long tells the model two things at once: bridge means short, eight lines means verse. Suno picks one and ignores the other. The result is a section that feels like a verse wearing a bridge costume. Keep bridges to four lines, keep verses to eight or fewer, and the tags stop fighting the content.
The other break is the meta-tag that contradicts the lyric. A style block that says "upbeat pop, 128 bpm" over lyrics about grief will produce a song that sounds confused, because the model tries to honor both. The style block sets the mood the words have to live inside. If the words want a different mood, change the style block, not the words.
The last break is the missing outro. Most prompts end on the last chorus line and stop. Suno will cut the song hard, no fade, no resolution. An [Outro] tag with two lines under it gives the model permission to land the plane. Two lines is enough. The absence of an outro is the most common reason a generated song feels unfinished.
WHAT IT CHANGES
You write the song shape before you write the song. Tag the sections, cap the chorus at seven syllables, place the style block above the first verse, and listen for whether the sections breathe where you placed the tags.

The load-bearing pieces are the bracket tags and the syllable ceiling on the chorus. The chorus lines sit at seven syllables or fewer so the hook lands in one breath. The bridge is four lines, half the length of a verse, so the model hears it as a departure and not a third verse. The outro is two lines so the song fades instead of cutting.
