When your taste should speak.
Midjourney V8.2 landed on July 24 with a personalization system that reads your rating history more closely. That makes your own taste a louder ingredient in every render, and it makes knowing when to quiet it part of the craft.

Your Team Fills In Timesheets. You Still Don't Trust Them.
Most agency owners assume the problem is compliance. Get everyone submitting on time and the data gets good. But ask an owner whose team submits religiously how much she'd bet on those numbers, and watch her hesitate. Because a timesheet filled in from memory, in rounded buckets, at the end of a long week, is a guess wearing a suit. Timeglass reads the record from the work itself. Not app names. Not recollection. What was actually done, for which client. See how it works.

TLDR
Everything below about V8.2 is Midjourney describing its own release, taken from the July 24 note. Nobody has measured it independently yet.
• V8.2 became the current image model on July 24, aimed at aesthetics, image quality, and personalization.
• The company describes the output as more creative, bold, sophisticated, edgy and fresh.
• Personalization profiles now draw on a much larger pool of images, so a long rating history carries more weight.
• The caveat: every quality claim here is the company describing its own work, and none of it has been checked by anyone outside it.
|
Midjourney released V8.2 on July 24, and it is not an architecture story. It is a taste story. The note is short: the update targets aesthetics and image quality and personalization, and the company says the situations where a prompt used to return something flat should be dramatically reduced. The half of that sentence I keep returning to is the personalization half.
Personalization here is assembled from the images you have rated. V8.2 says it understands those preferences more closely, especially on profiles carrying a lot of points, and that it draws from a much larger pool of images when it builds your profile. In plain terms, the taste you have been accumulating without thinking about it is now a stronger ingredient in every frame you make.
|
WHAT CHANGED A taste upgrade, not an engine swap.
The official note is short and specific, which is its own kind of signal. V8.2 targets aesthetics, image quality, and personalization. Midjourney says images should be more creative, bold, sophisticated, edgy and fresh, and that the random low-quality result should be dramatically reduced. Those are the company's words, not a measured outcome.
No independent comparison has been published, so the honest way to hold this is as a stated direction rather than a verified gain. That is not cynicism. It is the difference between an announcement and evidence, and the gap usually closes a few weeks after people start doing real work inside the model.
|
THE LEVER Your ratings became a document.
It helps to stop picturing personalization as a switch and start picturing it as a file you have been writing for months without noticing. Every image you rated is a line in it. V8.2 reads that file more closely and from a wider pool of references, which is why creators with long histories will feel this release more than newcomers will.
The reframing matters because a file can be edited, aimed, or set aside, while a switch can only be on or off. Once you can picture the thing the model is reading over your shoulder, you can start making decisions about when you actually want it consulted.
|
THE TENSION The brief has taste too.
Client work arrives with an aesthetic already attached, and it is rarely yours. A profile that has absorbed a year of your preferences will bend a neutral prompt toward those preferences quietly enough that the first frame reads as simply good rather than as suspiciously familiar. The frames look right. They just look like you.
On personal work that is the entire point and the reason to feed a profile at all. On commissioned work it is a slow drift away from the thing you were asked to make, and it tends to surface late, in a revision round, phrased by the client as something they cannot quite name.
|
THE HABIT Name the register before you type.
The practice I have settled on is to decide the register out loud first, then write it into the prompt as an explicit constraint instead of handing the question to the profile. If the work is mine, I let the profile speak and judge the result on whether it still surprises me. If the work belongs to a brief, I name the reference style in words.
Then I run one plain pass before the personalized one and set the two frames side by side. The question is not which frame is prettier. It is whether the profile moved the image toward the brief or only toward my habits, and those two outcomes look identical until both frames are in front of you.
|
THE TAKEAWAY Taste is an input you can aim.
A stronger personalization system is not a reason to describe less. It is a reason to describe more precisely, because the model now carries a second opinion into every render and that opinion is yours from six months ago. Aim it deliberately instead of inheriting it. The creators who get the most out of V8.2 will be the ones who can say, in one sentence, whose taste a given frame is meant to serve.
|
THE NEXT WORKING NOTE
I am putting together the taste kit: the register lines I paste into a client brief, the plain-pass prompt I run before the personalized one, and a two-frame sheet for deciding whether a profile helped or only flavoured the render.
Want it when it ships? Reply with send me the taste kit and I will get it to you.

A QUESTION FOR YOU
Which of your habits shows up uninvited?
Reply with the specific one. The colour you always drift toward, the lens you always reach for, the crop you keep repeating even when the brief asked for something else.
If this was useful, forward it to a creator who builds to other people's briefs every week.
